NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – The Northwestern State cross country program will open its 2014 season on Aug. 29 at the McNeese 6k Relay from the Enos Derbonne Complex in Lake Charles.

Joining NSU in the dual relay race will be LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette and host McNeese State.

The meet will mark the fifth time since 2009 that Northwestern State has competed in the McNeese hosted event with 2012 being the only odd year out.

"There will be some good schools down there," second-year head coach Mike Heimerman said. "We've done that meet before. It will be nice to get one under our belt since we have so many new kids this year."

The women will start things off at 6:30 p.m. followed by the men around 6:30.

Over the offseason, the Demon and Lady Demons added a combined 11 athletes to a program that finished 12th and 14th respectively at the Southland Conference Championships from Lake Charles last year.

Northwestern State's next meet will take place Sept. 12 from Rice's 38th Annual Justin F. Cooper Memorial Rice Invitational in Houston.

NSU will take part in seven meets including hosting the NSU Pre-Conference Meet on Oct. 6 and the Southland Conference Championships on Nov. 3 at the Northwestern Hills Golf Course.
