NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Natchitoches Central student and football player 18 year old Johnquaries Smith was laid to rest Saturday.

Many gathered for Smith's funeral at the events center in Natchitoches Saturday afternoon.

Smith died Tuesday after he was punched at school by fellow student.

Last night during the Chief's first game of the season, Smith's jersey was walked out onto the field by his cousins.

The team has dedicated this season to their fallen teammate and adopted a new motto. At each game they plan to "Fly High with 53".
NCHS Football coach Brandon Helms assured Smith's family that while they may have lost their loved one, they've gained over 100 new ones, in ever football player on the team.

Helms said, "It finally hit today, there was some guys that didn't want to let loose, we had a team meeting this morning, and I told them you need to let loose, and they did and we are all emotional, I was guarded until last night.

As for the suspect in all this, 16 year old Timmy Robinson has been charged with manslaughter and according to Natchitoches Parish District Attorney, Robinson will be tried as an adult.
