Texas State downs NSU Soccer, 3-0

Posted: Updated:
SAN MARCOS, Texas --  Lynsey Curry accounted for four points and led Texas State to a 3-0 win over the Northwestern State soccer team Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Lady Demons' two-game road swing.

She assisted Tori Hale from the right side off of a header just 40 seconds into a game.  Hale leads Texas State (3-0-1) in goals (3) and points (6). Northwestern State fell to 1-3 on the season.

Curry scored her first goal of the season in the ninth minute with a shot in front of the goal shortly after a throw in, and her second assist was to Rachel Grout after Grout floated a ball over the goalkeeper from the left side in the 68th minute.

“Texas State is a strong team and we knew that, but there is still no reason to come out that flat in the first nine minutes,” said head coach George Van Linder. “When a team is down 2-0 in the first 10 minutes, the coach has to accept the blame. It was our first road trip of the year and I need to guide the young ones better and remind the old ones about playing on the road.”

The Lady Demons were outshot 22-8, and had no shots on-goal. Nine of the Bobcats' shots were on-goal, and finished the game with seven corner kicks.

Brooke Bourbonais started in goal for NSU, and played the entire game with six saves and 22 shots faced.  Freshman midfielder Sage Leffew had two shots for Northwestern State, and was the only Lady Demon who played in the field to compete the full 90 minutes.

Cache Haley led the team with four shots, and Shelby Balmer had two.

“Once again we had some good things happen, and we have the talent but we need the team. I am confident that we will get this sorted out in the coming days and be prepared,” said Van Linder. “I reminded our players we can still accomplish all of our goals and we intend to do that.”

Northwestern State will host Arkansas-Little Rock in its next match at the Demon Soccer Complex on Friday before it opens another two-game road swing on Sept. 7 against Baylor.  The Lady Demons will finish the road stint at Prarie View A&M on Sept. 12.
