Advisories

flood
Avoyelles Parish, LA

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN LAKE CHARLES HAS ISSUED AN

* URBAN AND SMALL STREAM FLOOD ADVISORY FOR MINOR FLOODING OF POOR
DRAINAGE AREAS IN...
AVOYELLES PARISH IN CENTRAL LOUISIANA...
THIS INCLUDES THE CITIES OF...SIMMESPORT...MOREAUVILLE...
MARKSVILLE...EFFIE...BUNKIE...BORDELONVILLE...

* UNTIL 345 AM CDT

* AT 152 AM CDT...NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE RADAR INDICATES SHOWERS
AND THUNDERSTORMS WITH HEAVY RAIN ARE MOVING EAST ACROSS AVOYELLES
PARISH. RADAR ESTIMATES SHOW 3 TO 5 INCHES OF RAIN HAVE FALLEN
ACROSS THIS AREA DURING THE PAST 3 HOURS. AN ADDITIONAL 2 TO 3
INCHES OF RAIN WILL BE POSSIBLE OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF HOURS AS
THESE STORMS SLOWLY MOVE EAST.

THIS WILL LIKELY PRODUCE FLOODING OF STREETS IN URBAN AREAS AS WELL
AS PONDING OF POOR DRAINAGE AREAS AND ELEVATED WATER LEVELS IN SMALL
CREEKS AND STREAMS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

BE ESPECIALLY CAUTIOUS AT NIGHT WHEN IT IS HARDER TO RECOGNIZE THE
DEPTH AND SPEED OF FLOOD WATERS.

TURN AROUND...DON'T DROWN... MOST FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES.
NEVER DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE INTO AREAS WHERE THE WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY. FLOOD WATERS ARE USUALLY DEEPER THAN THEY APPEAR. JUST ONE
FOOT OF FLOWING WATER IS POWERFUL ENOUGH TO SWEEP VEHICLES OFF THE
ROAD. WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE...TURN
AROUND...DONT DROWN.
