Mark Wood sworn in as Rapides Parish Sheriff Wednesday
Begins elected term Wednesday, July 1
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - It’s official: Rapides Parish has a new sheriff following a swearing-in ceremony Wednesday afternoon.
In front of family, friends, colleagues and other parish leaders, Sheriff-Elect Mark Wood officially took the title as Sheriff in the police jury room at the Rapides Parish Courthouse. Wood, who’s been in office for two months already, was first sworn in at the end of April, and a second time on Wednesday, since July 1 is officially when his term begins.
The new sheriff said the transition has been seamless and Sheriff Hilton has brought him up to speed on everything. Some of his biggest goals are to work with multiple agencies on narcotics and make sure everyone knows just how serious the sheriff’s office is about getting drugs off of the streets.
“We’ve actually reached out to Phoenix in working some cases on dope coming in from Phoenix, Arizona into here,” said Wood. “We’ll get into it a little bit more but we’re starting to release the cases that they are working now. Look I said all during the election that we’re all fighting the same bad guys, so let’s get on board and fight them together. That’s what we’re doing and everybody’s on board from APD to Pineville to the feds, state police. I mean I think the comradery is good.”
Sheriff Wood said everyone has been adjusting and holding Zoom meetings during the COVID-19 pandemic.
