Rapides Parish School District assumes control over all ‘Head Start’ operations
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - The Rapides Parish School District will be assuming control of all Head Start operations here in the parish effective Wednesday. This means that the program will be the responsibility of the Rapides Parish School Board for the next five years.
Another organization, known as ‘Save the Children,' held the grant for Head Start in the past. Now, the school board will serve a total of 850 children, a little over 600 of those being in the Head Start program, a little over 200 in the early Head Start program, and 18 pregnant moms.
Early Childhood Director Cindy Rushing tells us the program will be a collaboration between the Rapides Early Childhood Network and all of the child care centers in the parish so that each child can get the quality education they need before entering into kindergarten.
“We want every child in Rapides Parish, every young child in Rapides Parish to have the best education that we can give them. We feel like that we have a history of doing that, of having a quality, early childhood experience for our children, and we want that for all children. We love working with families and we feel like that is our passion, that is our calling,” said Rushing.
If your child was in Head Start last year and you’ve already confirmed your child is attending this upcoming school year, someone from the school board will be contacting you. For parents who have still not registered, they’re encouraged to go to RPSB.US to complete an early Head Start application.
The school board will be posting several job openings over the next several weeks, looking for anything from teachers to paraprofessionals, school food service workers as well as janitorial staff. They also plan to host a job fair in the near future.
