NEW ORLEANS, La. (AP) — The New Orleans Saints selected Houston defensive end Payton Turner 28th in the first round of the NFL draft.

The move comes after the Saints lost 202 sack leader Trey Hendrickson in free agency.

Turner played in just five games for Houston last season. But he had five sacks and 10 1/2 tackles for losses. He also forced a fumble.

Turner says he missed three of Houston’s eight games last season because of an upper calf strain, COVID-19 contact tracing and a positive test.

Saints coach Sean Payton says he expects Turner to play right away.
