Rapides Regional Medical Center hosts AHEC Summer Program
ALEXANDRIA, La. (RRMC) - Rapides Regional Medical Center is hosting “A-HEC of a Summer” with high school students interested in pursuing careers in healthcare.
Central Louisiana Health Education Center is offering its 20th consecutive year of summer programming for high school students. RRMC has partnered with Central La AHEC for 5 years.
This 15-day program gives students an opportunity to explore different healthcare professions and make informed decisions about their future based on experiences and observation.
RRMC will host 12 students from Holy Savior Menard, Pineville High School, Alexandria Senior High School, Northwood High School, Oak Hill High School, University Academy and Rapides High School. Students were chosen to participate based on their grades, a personal essay, letters of recommendation and an interview. The program is an accredited high school course for one half unit elective credit upon completion.
“Students will rotate through different departments and gain hands-on experiences and observe healthcare in real time,” said Theresa Hood, RNC, BSN, MS, said. “I’ve seen 52 students come through this program and at the end of those 15 days, many of them have made up their mind to either pursue a healthcare career, or try a different field, and that’s valuable information for a high school junior or senior.”
Students will visit: surgery, labor and delivery, radiology, social services, dietary, phlebotomy, pharmacy and rehab. Students also participate in hands-on workshops, visits from guest lecturers and field trips to other health-related facilities.
