Around 11:30, the Alexandria Police Department said officers initially responded to a call of a man threatening another man with a knife at a house on Webster Street. The victim escaped out of a window and called the police.
APD said the subject barricaded himself inside the home. As officers approached, he brandished a knife, and officers left the house. Crisis negotiators arrived on the scene and spent the next few hours attempting to communicate with the suspect, who was undergoing a mental health crisis. Some family members were also on the scene.
Around 2:30 p.m., a tactical team entered the house. The suspect was taken into custody peacefully.
APD's Public Information Officer Corporal Wade Bourgeois said the man was not being arrested and will undergo a medical evaluation. He also added that it's important for law enforcement to be able to handle a mental health crisis.
"It's one of the most important things we're doing as we're seeing an increase in the frequency of these types of calls. In this case, a lot of these tools and equipment that we have allow us to make a safe entry and deescalate or resolve these situations without force and that's best for everybody."
"I'm relieved that we have had a peaceful resolution to this incident," said Chief Jerrod King. “The frequency of calls involving someone in a mental health crisis has been steadily increasing for years. It's for this reason that our officers undergo substantial training in dealing with people in crisis, and in verbal de-escalation tactics. We appreciate our Crisis Negotiation Team, SWAT Team, detectives and our patrol officers out there today.”
The identity of the suspect is not being released and the investigation is ongoing.
