ORIGINAL STORY; February 18th:
After one year of being called the Alexandria Red River Festival, the City of Alexandria is changing the name of their summer festival back to Alex River Fete.
In 2019, his first year as mayor of Alexandria, Mayor Jeff Hall announced Alex River Fete would be renamed the Alexandria Red River Festival. The festival, held every May, was created under the previous administration under Mayor Jacques Roy. Hall's administration said the name change was a fresh start and would be more inclusive to the whole community.
The name change came with some criticism from locals and some who were involved with the festival in years past saying the change was unnecessary.
KALB noticed the name was possibly changing after an ordinance on Tuesday's Alexandria City Council agenda said, "Introduction of an ordinance authorizing the Mayor to promote the Alex River Fete by entering into all contracts for the Alex River Fete with bands and/or vendors related to the event and necessary for its production and other matters with respect thereto."
KALB reached out to the city's Special Projects Coordinator, Jim Smilie, and he confirmed the name would be changed back to Alex River Fete.
Keep in mind, no official action has taken place just yet. The ordinance will now go back to the finance committee at the next city council meeting before being voted on.
News Channel Five reached out to the mayor for comment. He says he has no comment for the time being and adds a lot will be discussed at the finance committee on March 3.
