Alexandria Mayor Jeff Hall announced the project in conjunction with the Red River Waterway Commission.
The cooperative endeavor agreement will add a hard covering to the stage area. Hall said that will allow them to add stage lighting. The plan is to also add security cameras and additional lighting for safety as well.
RRWC said they plan to give final approval for the agreement at next week’s meeting paying for 80 percent of the project. The commission will chip in roughly $3.2 million for the enhancements.
"Because we want people to know that it's available for their use and available for the public,” said Mayor Hall. “It's a beautiful thing to have that downtown so we are going to take advantage of all we can to make it attractive for those to come and enjoy."
“The RRWC is committed to the recreation project,” said Eric Gilmore, Marketing Director for RRWC. “The city is showing great progress downtown, this would enhance the area.”
Mayor Hall also said the city will look at adding to their Harbor Patrol, which is the police force that patrols the downtown area. Hall also wants to build a boardwalk on the levee. He said the project is in the beginning stages and should be completed in 2020.
