Avoyelles Parish students head back to school after tragedy

MARKSVILLE, La. (KALB) - Avoyelles Parish students went back to school Wednesday after five of their own were lost over the holiday break in a bus crash on a Florida interstate.

In order to help any students or teachers cope with the tragedy, the Avoyelles Parish School Board sent support staff and counselors to Marksville High School, Lafargue Elementary and Cottonport Elementary.

"We have certified counselors here from Avoyelles Parish as well as Rapides Parish," said Avoyelles Parish Assistant Superintendent Thelma Prater. "We are providing support if anyone needs support. This is a tragedy for all of us, so we are all taking it very hard and we are trying to be supportive for everyone. We are here for each and everyone."

Marksville High School's principal told us Monday night that they would help students express their grief through making cards for the family and signing posters with a picture of the student.

Prater said they will continue to provide support as long as it is needed.
