Avoyelles Police Jury asks residents to vote 'yes' on parish-wide propositions

AVOYELLES PARISH, La. (KALB) - The next Election Day is right around the corner. This Saturday it's your chance to get out and cast your vote for any runoff races from last month, and, depending on where you live, a few propositions.

Over in Avoyelles, one of the biggest is three parish-wide taxes presented by the Police Jury.

The first two are renewals, a 3/4 cent sales tax for solid waste collection and disposal, and a 1/4 cent sales tax for road and bridge maintenance and improvements. Both of these have been in effect for the past few decades.

The third one is a new 8-mill property tax to support the parish-wide solid waste program.

Police Jury President, Colonel Charlie Jones, explained that they're hoping to use this tax to allow the parish to get a long term contract with a landfill, and to build a transfer station which he says will ultimately help control garbage disposal costs moving forward.

"That the public would vote for all three propositions, that's the ultimate situation for us,” said Col. Jones. “And that we would be able to provide this service for them at no extra cost. Under this structure in which we are looking, in terms of multi-contract structures, we feel that it would be an indefinite period in which we could sustain collection of solid wastes as a public service in the parish."

The polls will be open on December 8 from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
