Bolton High School started off the school year on Monday with a brand new program.

The Bolton Conservatory for the Performing and Visual Arts is the latest addition to the Rapides Parish School District's secondary education opportunities.

It was just an idea back in January, but district administration and the school board got the ball rolling. Bolton's back wing was transformed into space for theater, dance, band, orchestra, visual arts and music classes. Students now have space to create in rehearsal halls, a dance studio, visual art gallery and more.

The auditorium is currently being refurbished.

Staff said there are still open slots in the program. Students who are interested must audition.

Bolton's theater program will hold their first showing of 'The Little Mermaid' on October 3.
