ALEXANDRIA, La. (CLTCC) - Central Louisiana Technical Community College (CLTCC) announced that 21 students from its seven campuses will compete in a regional welding competition on Feb. 21, at the Alexandria Campus.
The competition will take place in the welding program area from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.
Students will be given blueprints and various tasks, and compete against their peers to demonstrate their technical and leadership skills in Welding Technology. There will be three overall winners from the regional competition in three categories – gold, bronze and silver. The contests will be judged by the American Welding Society (AWS) Central Louisiana Chapter.
“SkillsUSA is the super bowl or NBA finals for career and technical colleges; contests begin locally and continue through the state and national levels,” said Ashley Boyd, Welding Instructor at the Rod Brady Campus in Jena and SkillsUSA Chapter Advisor. “This regional competition is designed to prepare students for the competition at the state level, where they will compete to earn a spot in the national competition, which showcases the best career and technical education students in the nation in more than 30 skill areas.”
The state competition is in April in Shreveport, and the national competition is in June in Louisville, Ky.
Sponsors for the regional competition include the AWS Chapter, Cenla Metal Works, Crest Industries, DIS-TRAN, Lincoln Electric and Welders Equipment. The sponsors are providing equipment and material for the competition, their time, and lunch for the students.
