Chief King spoke about improvements made this year, including expanding APD's community policing program, adding an ATF officer to the team, and next month adding a DEA agent.
He said the focus should not just be on arrests but preventing crimes before they happen. He said his officers work their best to make that happen.
"We've tried to improve and get better every single day," King said. "Sometimes we fall short. Sometimes things happen that are out of our control. Sometimes officers don't make the right decision. Sometimes officers don't provide the best service. That is a fact and we will not deny that, but overwhelmingly they get it right almost every single time."
King said there has been an 83% decrease in homicides the first six months of this year, compared to 2018.
"It's your police department; we work for you," King said. "We should never live in fear to send our kids out to play in the street."
