A new candidate is joining the race for Rapides Parish Sheriff. Former Rapides Parish School Resource Officer Dennis Dezendorf is retiring after 17 years with RPSO to run.

Dezendorf said he has 37 years behind the badge. He retired as a major in the army, commanding soldiers during Desert Storm. He said he worked in probation and parole in North Louisiana.

He also spent time with the Natchitoches Sheriff's Office before working for RPSO in the jail and then as a school resource officer.

He said he felt compelled to run because the sheriff's office is short-handed.

"I want to fully staff the SRO's, fully staff the patrol division, fully staff corrections," Dezendorf said. "Because those are the bulwark of the law enforcement effort in any agency. I want to make things better for the deputies. I want to make things better for the people. I want to make sure our children are protected."

Dezendorf is the fourth candidate to publicly announce his run for sheriff.
