Disabled American Veterans conference kicks off at Hotel Bentley
Alexandria is playing host to a large number of vets this weekend for the Disabled American Veterans Mid-Winter Conference.
The group is a nonprofit that provides lifetime support to our nation's heroes and their families. They hold two of these conferences during the year, they invite members down to make sure things continue to run smoothly down the road.
They'll be at the Hotel Bentley all weekend, and the opening ceremony was on Saturday morning. We're told this year they have nearly doubled their attendance.
Commanders and even special guest, Representative Ralph Abraham, said it's great to see so much support for our veterans.
“This time we've had more members showing up than we've had in many years,” said current DAV Commander. John Mercer. “We normally get about 100 if we're lucky. This time we've had close to 200. So it makes a big difference."
"What that says is that this is a very good and structured organization,” added Rep. Abraham. “They get their people together and they speak with one voice, and they march in one line. Two things in America that we should always do; vote, and honor and respect our military, both active and prior."
This conference is usually held at the Best Western, but the DAV is proud to say they'll be at the Bentley for at least the next three years.
