In honor of Saint Patrick’s Day, people gathered around the Irish pub sporting fun, green attire, jamming to Celtic rock tunes as they awaited for Father Chad Partain to bless the beer.

It's a tradition that's been around for centuries, originating from Irish monks who would drink beer during the Lenten season.

Father Partain led the crowd in a short prayer as he blessed a glass of Guinness, and of course took a few celebratory chugs along with cheers from the crowd.

Father Partain said he's happy to be part of the fun tradition.

"Guiness and other Irish stouts were actually made by Irish monks to help them during the Lenten fast, to help them with their strength,” said Father Partain. “And because it is hops and water, it does qualify for the Lenten fast. It's a lot of fun, it's just a lot of fun. And it has become part of our downtown tradition."

Father Partain performed the first Blessing of the Beer at Finnegan’s in 2006 and has been doing it ever since.
