ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - More than 700 people were in Downtown Alexandria on Saturday morning, helping young ladies activate their full potential.
Girls on the Run is a YWCA program that is all about building confidence and health skills that will carry girls through adolescence and life.
It wasn't about how fast the girls could run a 5k on Saturday, it was about believing they could do it, training for it, and crossing that finish line. Over the past 10-week training period, the girls exercised, learned about healthy eating habits, and cheered on their new friends.
Coordinators said the program has changed their girls for the better.
"It’s amazing, when I started we had 150 girls cross that finish line,” expressed Morgan Wampler, Council Director. “And today we had around 320 to 350 crossing that finish line. So it's just amazing to see that we're in five different parishes across central Louisiana and that so many girls can do what they want to do, and they're beautiful and they're confident. And then they're going to take these life skills and use them for the rest of their lives."
