Grieving families, dealing with the loss of a child come together for the holiday season
As the transition from Thanksgiving to Christmas begins, many people think about their families. However, for some families those memories also carry a lot of sadness. That's why the Alexandria Zoo held its 14th Annual Butterfly Tree Memorial Service.
The holiday season can be one of the toughest times of the year for many families who are grieving the loss of a child. However, most families say, they believe there is strength in numbers.
On Sunday, a number of Cenla families met at the Alexandria Zoo's Butterfly Garden to decorate a Christmas tree with a set of special made ornaments. Those ornaments contained pictures of deceased children.
"My daughter was murdered 15 years ago and her murder remains unsolved," Stephanie Belgard, the mother of Courtney Coco said. "We're fighting for justice for her, [and] when you come around other people that lost their children... it helps with the healing [process]."
The Cabrini Hospital and the Bereaved Parents of Cenla sponsored Sunday's event.
