BEAUREGARD PARISH, La. (LSP) - A woman from Lake Charles died on Tuesday afternoon following a two-vehicle crash on US Highway 171 south of DeRidder.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m., a 2015 GMC Sierra driven by Rhonda Cooley, 57, of DeRidder was traveling north on US 171 when, for reasons still under investigation, the pickup traveled across the median and collided with a southbound 2017 Toyota Prius driven by James Moody, 68, of Lake Charles and carrying Connie Moody, 68, as passenger.

Connie Moody was pronounced dead at the scene by the Beauregard Parish Coroner’s Office, but James Moody was not injured. Cooley received minor injuries and was charged with careless operation. All of those involved were wearing their seatbelts.

Routine toxicology samples were obtained from both drivers and will be submitted for analysis.

The crash remains under investigation.
