Inmate remains in critical condition following lightning strike at David Wade Correctional Center

BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana Dept. of Public Safety and Corrections) - An inmate injured during Monday night's lightning strike at David Wade Correctional Center in Homer, Louisiana, remains in critical condition at a Northwest Louisiana Hospital.

Lightning struck around 6 p.m. while the inmates were playing flag football, sending 10 prisoners to area hospitals for various injuries. All but one have returned to the prison following treatment for cuts, bruises, headaches, dizziness and disorientation.

David Wade Correctional Center emergency medical staff quickly stabilized the inmates before transporting them to local hospitals.

The lightning strike came without warning, as it is David Wade Correctional Center's procedure to clear the yard when potentially dangerous weather approaches. The strike hit the ground adjacent to the injured inmates

For security reasons, the Department will not release the names of the inmates or their locations.
