Recently, he hired Alexandria Senior High School Principal Jonathan Garrett to take the executive assistant superintendent position that Kim Bennett left last month.

Garrett has been ASH's principal for the last two years. Powell said he interviewed several highly qualified candidates, but Garrett fit the bill. He said Garrett has been a principal at every level, including Ruby Wise Elementary and Buckeye Junior High.

He wanted to keep familiar faces at ASH, so former Assistant Principal Jody Goodman is ASH's new principal.

Powell said he is confident Garrett's experience will help lead the entire district.

"According to research, the two things that impact learning the most are classroom teachers and school building leaders," Powell said. "And so selecting Mr. Garrett for that position, bringing him straight out of the principalship, he is going to be able to provide a level of leadership having come right out of that position that I think already brings a level of respect and appreciation for the work that is taking place across our district."

On Tuesday's Live at 5, we'll have more from the sit-down interview with Powell where he addresses unity in the district, infrastructure issues, goals and more.
