BATON ROUGE, La. (LDAF) - A Merryville man has been accused of intentionally setting a wooded area on fire in Beauregard Parish, according to the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry.

Gerald W. Neely, 47, was arrested for one count of simple arson on July 16.

LDAF had received a complaint on July 12, of several fires near Division St. in Merryville.

Following an investigation, Neely was arrested and charged. He was booked into Beauregard Parish Sheriff’s Detention Center.

“We aggressively pursue arson cases. Not only is arson a threat to property, but it can also endanger lives,” said Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain. “We’ve recently seen a decrease in wildfires, some the result of arson, handled by the LDAF. We truly believe our pursuit of these suspects, arrests made and prosecution of those individuals are the reasons why we are seeing fewer cases.”

Neely's bond was set at $5,000. He bonded out of jail on Aug. 5.
