POLLOCK, La. (KALB) - The number of people killed in fires this year is down slightly from last year, but we still have a couple months to go.

Even so, local fire departments like Holiday Village and the Town of Ball made efforts to prevent more deaths from happening.

The departments visited elementary schools during Fire Prevention Week to teach students how important it is to have a plan.

Bradley Daniels, Holiday Village Fire Departments Driver Operator, said it’s important to teach kids fire safety at a young age.

"Not every family talks to their kid about fire in their house and what to do," Daniels said.

Daniels is also encouraging parents to create a plan, and practice it, in case of an emergency.

"It's important to have a meeting place outside of your home,” Daniels explained. “If there's ever a fire in your house and you want to have it somewhere in the front of your house where you're easily seen when the firemen do get on scene."
