ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - With the big day right around the corner, Walmart was bustling on Saturday morning, but one special group stood out from the crowd in their police uniforms.
Shop with a Cop is the annual Christmas event that different law enforcement agencies participate in.
Alexandria City Marshals, along with Alexandria, Pineville and Woodworth Police Officers, and even deputies with the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office went Christmas shopping with kids from local families.
They've been setting aside money all year with this in mind and invited around 75 families to join them.
It isn't exactly in their job description, but for many officers, this is what it all comes down to. The real gift behind the presents is the magic of Christmas.
"Oh it's great,” expressed City Marshal Jerome Hopewell. “To see the smiles on these kids’ faces. One of the ladies who came in here earlier said her daughter had been up since 3 this morning getting ready. So yeah, it's amazing."
This year the City Marshal's Office also renamed the event in honor of former marshal James Byrd, who passed away in May.
