Longtime Rapides Registrar of Voters, Joanell Wilson, dies at 73

Longtime Rapides Parish Registrar of Voters, Joanell Wilson, has passed away at the age of 73.

Wilson, also known as "JoJo" worked in the Rapides Parish Registrar of Voters' Office for nearly 50 years. She first served as Chief Deputy and was later appointed as Registrar of Voters. She retired in July of 2015.

Wilson was instrumental in implementing the Registrar of Voters' offices statewide computer system. While a member of the Louisiana Registrar of Voters' Association, she served on the Louisiana Board of Supervisors of Elections, the Retirement Board, and many other committees, including chairing the Legislative Committee for many years.

"We were wonderful friends," said Lin Stewart, current Rapides Parish Registrar of Voters. "She is responsible for a lot of bills that improved the state's voting systems."

Wilson was also a member of the Catholic church and volunteered to raise funds for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Alexandria. She was also a member of the Junior Leauge of Alexandria and served on the Board of Directors of the Shepherd Center.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. at the chapel of John Kramer and Son Funeral Home.
