A moped rider from Basile was killed in Evangeline Parish on New Year's Day.
On January 1, around 10 p.m., Troopers from Louisiana State Police Troop I began investigating a two-vehicle fatality involving a moped and a passenger car on US 190 near LA 3068 in Evangeline Parish. The crash claimed the life of Maritan Romero, 56, of Basile.
The preliminary investigation revealed Romero was traveling west in the right lane on US 190 on a 2018 Cabo Cruiser electric moped. At the same time, Teresa Henry, 21, of Eunice, was traveling west in a 1999 Pontiac Bonneville and struck the moped from behind. Romero was ejected from the moped and landed in the north ditch.
Despite wearing a DOT approved helmet, Romero sustained fatal injuries as a result of the crash. Romero was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Evangeline Parish Coroner’s Office. Impairment is not suspected at this time but standard toxicology results are pending. This crash remains under investigation.
As we begin a new year, Louisiana State Troopers wish to remind motorists to always make good decisions while in a motor vehicle. Never drive while impaired, fatigued, or distracted, always ensure every occupant is properly restrained, and follow all traffic laws. Taking simple precautions such as these can often mean the difference between life and death.
