NATCHITOCHES, La. (NPSO) - The mother and girlfriend of a Natchitoches Parish Work Release inmate have been arrested for allegedly aiding in his escape from a work detail.
Jale Christopher Hopwood, 33, arrived at his assigned work detail in south Natchitoches Parish on Saturday evening at 7:00 p.m. At 9:00 p.m., his supervisors discovered him missing. The area was thoroughly searched, but they were unable to locate the suspect.
During their investigation, authorities developed reliable information that Hopwood’s girlfriend was Stephanie Fruge Howe, 34, of Shreveport. They concluded that she traveled to an undisclosed location near Chopin and picked Hopwood up after he jumped a rear fence at the job site. From there, they fled to Shreveport.
On February 11, a concerned citizen contacted the Opelousas Police Department after they recognized Hopwood and a female at a hotel. He had seen his wanted picture on a local newscast. Opelousas Police took Hopwood into custody without incident along with his mother, Raylene June Hopwood, 57, of Shreveport. They were both transported to the Natchitoches Detention Center where they were booked.
Jale Hopwood was charged with simple escape. Raylene Hopwood was charged with assisting with the escape. Stephanie Howe was also arrested and booked into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center. She was charged with assisting with the escape.
All three remain in the Natchitoches Detention Center awaiting bond.
