ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Fraternal Order of Police members who are working without pay during the government shutdown can apply for financial assistance through the National Police Credit Union.

It's a benefit of FOP membership. Eligible members will be automatically approved for a $5,000 loan. The first loan payment will be deferred for 90 days.

The president of the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police tells us it's an easy way to help those who never thought they would be in this position.

"I don't think it's a position that any of them think they had to be in," said Darrell Basco, the president of the Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police. "Of course, we're always worried about government layoffs and things that happen that are usually on a smaller scale where we are worried about the laying off of one or two employees from a parish or municipal government. Not where you are looking at a complete workforce like this."
