Sheriff Randy Smith held a press conference on Wednesday morning, saying the victims, Raegan Day and Dustin Hartline, were killed as part of a "carjacking gone bad".

Smith said the suspects had planned to meet on Salmen Street. They were wearing masks and equipped with guns. Both Hartline and Day were shot, put in a vehicle and disposed of in the river.

He said that it was a “sad situation... over a car.”

“This is a terrible tragedy," said Coroner Chuck Preston. "St. Tammany is kind of a big, little town. The entire community is touched by tragedy like this.”

Preston said that Day suffered two gunshot wounds to the head, one at the back left and one to the front. Hartline suffered a single gunshot wound to the back of the head.
