Now Showing: 'Sonic' to speed past 'Birds of Prey'
The combination of Valentine’s Day and Presidents Day weekend could mean more people headed to the movies.
"Sonic the Hedgehog" finally speeds onto the big screen, after criticism of the title character's original design prompted a do-over. The family adventure based on the popular videogame should easily pass "Birds of Prey" for the top spot. Analysts expect it to make 40-to-50 million dollars over the four-day weekend.
Two other new films will duke it out with "Birds of Prey" for second place. "Blumhouse's Fantasy Island" puts a horror spin on the 70s TV show about the dangers of wish fulfillment. It's looking at a four-day debut worth 13-to-15-million dollars or more.
"The Photograph" is also aiming for the silver medal. Issa Rae and Lakeith Stanfield star in the romantic drama, which box office watchers estimate could draw 12-to-15-million dollars or more in ticket sales over four days.
Finally, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell star in "Downhill," based on an acclaimed Swedish film. The dark comedy about a family on a ski vacation is looking at a four-day opening weekend worth four million dollars.
