Pineville firefighters head to Florida to assist hurricane recovery efforts
The Florida State Fire Marshal's Office has requested assistance from the Louisiana State Fire Marshal's Office due to Hurricane Michael. A total of six firefighters from Region 6 are joining the state team for this mission.
KALB caught up with the Pineville firefighters before they left Wednesday morning. The four men are headed to Florida with a trailer full of supplies and gear to help with Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) missions that may occur along the coast. Members of this team have responded to other significant storms in the past. Team leader Kenny Kessler says they are prepared to work 14-hour days if necessary to help those in need.
"You go and see some of the worst stuff you've ever seen," said Kessler. "People lost everything. You have to be compassionate, but you might be having a bad day, because you're tired, but you still have to have that compassion towards them, helping them out."
The Alexandria team will be pairing up with 75 other firefighters and medics from the Florida Urban Search and Rescue team. Firefighters are expected to spend at least seven days along the coast.
