Pineville man killed in ATV crash on Hwy 28 East

PINEVILLE, La. (Louisiana State Police) - On Monday afternoon, a crash involving an ATV and a passenger car killed a young man from Pineville. The victim was not wearing a helmet.

Troopers arrived at the crash that occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Hwy 28 East in Pineville.

The crash involved a 2003 Yamaha ATV, driven by Stephen Wade Bennett Jr., 23, of Pineville, and a 2004 Buick LeSabre, driven by Elise L. West, 59, of Mississippi. The Buick was eastbound on Hwy 28 East when the Yamaha entered the roadway from the eastbound shoulder. This action placed the Yamaha in the direct travel path of the Buick, resulting in a collision.

Bennett Jr. was ejected from the ATV and was pronounced dead on the scene. West received minor injuries, but refused medical treatment.
Routine toxicology tests are pending. The crash remains under investigation.

The public is reminded that it is dangerous and illegal to operate off-road vehicles (i.e. three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and other all-terrain vehicles) on any public roadway in this state.

Troop E Troopers have investigated 15 fatal crashes in 2019, resulting in 17 fatalities.
