LAS VEGAS, Nev. (AP) - President Donald Trump appears to have reversed position to now oppose creating a national nuclear waste dump at Nevada’s Yucca Mountain.
Pres. Trump tweeted Thursday that his administration will respect the state, which has argued that the site about 100 miles from Las Vegas isn’t suitable.
Nevada, I hear you on Yucca Mountain and my Administration will RESPECT you! Congress and previous Administrations have long failed to find lasting solutions – my Administration is committed to exploring innovative approaches – I’m confident we can get it done!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) February 6, 2020
The president says his administration will explore “innovative approaches.” He didn’t offer details.
Pres. Trump’s campaign chief in Nevada welcomed the tweet and says he talked with the president about Yucca Mountain last weekend.
Nevada’s Democratic members of Congress also welcomed the news but at least one expressed skepticism whether Pres. Trump would follow through and abandon a push for the project.
