BATON ROUGE, La. (American Red Cross) - As Tropical Storm Barry moves into the state, the Red Cross is hard at work providing care and comfort in the community, in taking supplies and volunteers, and preparing for post-landfall impact.

The Baton Rouge office is acting as Disaster Response HQ for the state. Over the last several hours, dozens of volunteers have arrived at the office for in-processing, orientation, and placement as they pre-stage for post-landfall support, and activate to support current community needs. In addition, logistics staff received shipments from seven 18-wheelers, with four additional awaiting arrival off-site. These shipments came from several states across the south and include items like cribs, cots, blankets, comfort kits, and clean-up supplies.

With the full impact yet to be felt across south Louisiana, the Red Cross wants to share the following tips to keep residents safe over the next 24 hours:

If an emergency threatens your neighborhood, prepare to evacuate quickly and leave the area if local officials tell you to do so.
•Have your disaster kit ready. Review your emergency plan with everyone in your household.
•Plan your evacuation route and alternates, in case main roads are impassable. Where will you go and how will you get there? Will you go to a hotel, a friend or relative’s home, or an emergency shelter?

Turn around, don’t drown! Stay off the roads. If you must drive and you encounter a flooded roadway, turn around and go another way.
•If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
•Head for higher ground and stay there.

Stay away from floodwaters. Beware of snakes, insects and other animals that may be in or around floodwaters and your home.
•Keep children and pets away from hazardous sites and floodwaters.
•If power lines are down, don’t step in puddles or standing water.

Download the free Red Cross Emergency App for real-time weather alerts, open shelters and expert advice on floods.
