Remembering Dr. Chris Rich: Prominent Cenla sports doctor passes away
News Channel 5 learned on Saturday that prominent Central Louisiana sports doctor, Chris Rich passed away at his home, surrounded by loved ones. We’re told he has been battling a rare liver cancer for 15 months.
Dr. Rich is best known for helping put Mid State Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Center on the map. He helped get the practice up and running in 1988, leaving in 2011; but not before he developed a number of programs that Mid State still uses today.
He also served as Northwestern State University's team physician, as well as serving 44 high schools in the area. Not to mention he started a physical day, that was renamed in his honor late last year.
He was also presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Louisiana Orthopedic Association, where he served as a past president.
We spoke with one of his longtime coworkers, Dr. Michael Leddy, who Dr. Rich helped bring to the practice.
“It’s a tremendous loss to the community,” expressed Dr. Leddy. “But, I really and truly believe with all the people that Chris touched and all the people who he had the opportunity to add to their careers, he has left the community in good hands with other people. That is going to be his legacy moving forward.”
Dr. Rich is survived by his wife, Vickie, three children and four grandchildren.
