Students in Avoyelles head back to school with transparent book bags

AVOYELLES PARISH, La. (KALB) - This year as a safety measure the Avoyelles Parish School District is holding a transparent book bag trial run.

The district allowed principals at their ten schools to make the decision on whether or not they would require students to have clear or mesh book bags.

Superintendent Blaine Dauzat said the idea came from a principal.

"The principal called me and asked if she could do it at her school," Dauzat said. "I said yes, sounds like a good idea. And then when the other principals found out I had allowed one school to do it, more of them jumped on board. So, we offered it to all of them and several of them chose to do it."

The superintendent said if the trial runs smoothly, they will look into making transparent book bags a parish policy next year. Seven out of the 10 schools are participating this year.
