NEW YORK (AP) - Usually a sunny time of escapism in theaters, this year's summer movie season is teaming with demons, serial killers and possessed dolls.

The summer blockbuster was born with the sound of screams echoing through packed movie houses during Steven Spielberg's "Jaws." But the summer, Hollywood's most lucrative, came to be swamped by superheroes and cartoons and only the occasional monster movie.

This summer, "Child's Play" will open, cheekily, against "Toy Story 4." The Blumhouse thriller "Ma" will release on Memorial Day weekend, the marquee weekend for the summer movie season.

Jim Jarmusch will debut his zombie comedy "The Dead Don't Die." Ari Aster will premiere his "Hereditary" follow-up, "Midsommar." And "Brightburn" will tell a far darker "Superman"-like story.
