RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - Imagine being welcomed at the office by new faces and a full marching band! That’s how the first Tuesday of every month now goes for students across Rapides Parish.
"Together Tuesday" is a new initiative started by the district to bring students and community members, well, together.
The new celebration begins bright and early at drop off. Students at Phoenix Magnet Elementary practically flew off of the buses to see who came to visit them.
“I was like what is this noise,” said second-grade student Peyton Miller. “When I walked down it was this crazy band."
This month Peabody Magnet High School's band was in charge of getting students moving. Clifford the Big Red Dog was also out front giving high fives and hugs.
"I was like what in the world is going on and then one of the teachers was like, oh it is 'Together Tuesday',” said fifth-grade student Amarii Aaron.
All-day long, community members stopped by to read, teach a skill, or share their past experiences. Louisiana National Guardsmen and former LSU baseball player Warren Morris also stopped by Phoenix on Tuesday.
"Rapides Parish School Board personnel come, sheriff's department, Alexandria police,” said Phoenix Assistant Principal Julie Gills. “Everybody, we have invited them all."
The new parish-wide initiative is part of Superintendent Jeff Powell's efforts to show community members they are better together.
"It is just a great way to show all our students how much their entire community loves them, cares for them and wants to see them successful,” Powell said. “That is the heart of Together Tuesday."
It's an early wake-up call.
"It woke me up a little too much, it got me up too much,” said second-grade student Sam Eskew.
But, students wouldn't mind having special visitors every day.
"I feel awesome,” said fifth-grade student Cooper Robinson. “It makes me feel like I rule the world."
The community will be back at it again on Tuesday, December 3.
Rapides Parish Schools welcome any parents, community leaders or organizations who would like to join them on Together Tuesdays. Those interested should contact their school of choice.
