Tom Konvicka meets with officials to prepare for hurricane season
Meteorologist Tom Konvicka discussed the upcoming threat that the 2017 Hurricane Season could pose, with predictions of 13 named Hurricanes or Tropical Storms.
Staying ahead of disasters by being aware of upcoming events is one way Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is able to assist victims of disasters quickly and efficiently.
VOAD's primary function is to foster accurate and streamlined services to people affected by disasters. David Britt, President and CEO of United Way in Central Louisiana, attributes it's success to a strong network within our community.
"A lot of the agencies we know each other and we could literally drive around and talk but without that connection without that network everyone would pretty much be in the dark for quite a while not knowing," said Britt. "Where is the need? What is needed? So the VOAD helps us to respond much more quickly. We don't have all the resources in the world, but the resources we do have we can bring to the table and get them out there much more quickly."
VOAD consists of organizations such as United Way, The Red Cross, Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, and The Food Bank.
