Bender was indicted on charges of filing false public records, abuse of office and malfeasance in office after being arrested in July 2016 by Louisiana State Police. He has pleaded "not guilty."

He was set to go to trial on January 7. After his attorney, George Higgins, filed a motion in limine, which is a motion to limit or prevent certain evidence in court, the trial was pushed to April 8.

A February 19 hearing was also set to hear the motion, as well as any other motions that may be filed. The defense has until January 25 to file any.

The case is being prosecuted by special prosecutor Hugo Holland.
