RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB) - A father charged with first-degree murder who is accused of throwing a newborn baby into the trash back in February will head to trial next March.
Carl Hall and the baby's mother, Thelma Kirkland, were both charged in the case. According to court records, Kirkland is undergoing a mental evaluation to see if she is competent to stand trial.
While the baby was tossed in the trash in February, the child was taken off life support two months later. The couple had reported to emergency personnel that it was a miscarriage, according to police, but when help arrived, they found a baby in the trash.
A pre-trial is set for November 15.
Hall is being represented by Jermaine Harris, a former prosecutor with the DA's office. The case is being prosecuted by Brian Cespiva.
