Tyler Hall discusses flood safety

ALEXANDRIA, La, (KALB) - With all of the recent rainfall in central Louisiana, we have been seeing severe weather watches and warnings concerning flooding in the area.

Here are some helpful tips when it comes to flood safety. Stay away from the flood-prone areas in your parish such as stream beds, drainage ditches and/or culverts. Move to higher ground if flooding does pose a threat to. Remaining weather alert and aware during heavy rainy weather is important as well.

Never, under any circumstances, drive your vehicle into water of an unknown depth. The majority of flash flood deaths may occur when folks drive their vehicles into flooded roadways. The famous saying when it comes to flood safety awareness is, “Turn Around Don’t Drown!”

Abandon your vehicle immediately if it ends up stalling and be sure to seek higher ground in a flooded roadway. Vehicles may be swept away rather quickly as flood waters rise rather rapidly. Roadways that are flooded can hide several hazards such as rocks, trees, trash and other types of debris that may be dangerous to someone in their path.

The KALB First Alert Storm Team will continue to monitor the area rivers across Central Louisiana as levels will remain high for days if not weeks moving forward in the early stages of twenty-thousand nineteen. Please download the KALB Weather app for your smartphone, search KALB WX in the app store and also please go ahead and like our KALB Weather Facebook page as well. The app and Facebook page gets updated daily several times a day. We will continue to monitor this river flood situation on these platforms and any other big weather events that will occur during 2019. Remain weather aware and stay safe.
