At 9:45 a.m., APD officers responded to the incident on the 1500 block of McNutt Drive. There they found the man seated in his car and armed with a handgun. Crisis negotiators responded to the scene to open communications with the man. McNutt Drive was shut down as a result.

Shortly after 3:00 p.m., following a breakdown in communications, a SWAT team deployed gas into the vehicle, which caused the man to exit the car and disarm himself. He was then taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for mental health treatment.

"All of our officers did an outstanding job in this situation," said Chief Jerrod King. "This kind of incident is exactly why we train as much as we do. I want to thank the Crisis Negotiation Team, the SWAT Team, and all of our Patrol Officers and Detectives who responded to the scene."

The identity of the man has not been released.
