RAPIDES PARISH, La. (RPSO) - On May 15 around 8:15 a.m., deputies responded to Havens Road in Hineston, in reference to a report of an unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.

According to the complainant, the suspect took their vehicle, a gray Honda Civic, and would not return it. The complainant also stated the suspect would not respond to calls or texts to return the vehicle. The complainant later discovered a handgun was missing and said that the suspect may be suicidal. Deputies took the report, entered the vehicle into the national database (NCIC) and issued a “be on the look-out” for the vehicle.

Around 1:25 p.m., deputies spotted the stolen vehicle traveling west on Padgett Road and attempted to make a traffic stop. The suspect refused to stop and deputies initiated a pursuit. The vehicle continued onto LA Highway 112 and toward LA Highway 121 where spike strips were deployed.

The suspect stopped just before the spike strips between L. Robinson Road and LA Highway 121. As deputies were ordering the suspect out of the vehicle, a single gunshot was heard from inside the vehicle. Deputies surrounded and approached the vehicle, discovering that the suspect died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Acadian Ambulance responded to the scene, as well as the Rapides Parish Coroners’ Office, where the suspect was pronounced deceased.

Sheriff’s Detectives are conducting their investigation and the deceased person’s name is not being released until notification of next of kin.
