ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB) - Have you noticed the shades of purple, green, and gold showing up all over town? The colors are even in our desserts.
It's because Mardi Gras is in full effect, and so are king cakes! Most will say you can't enjoy Mardi Gras to the fullest unless you have at least one of these delectable desserts.
For the last 25 years, the bakers at Atwood’s Bakery have been making king cakes every Mardi Gras season.
At the beginning of Mardi Gras, they make about 150 a day and, towards the end of the season, they spend their days making more than 500 king cakes.
Aaron Atwood gave one key tip to keep your king cakes fresh after buying them.
“Oh um, eating them,” Atwood explained. “It’s bread dough at its heart, so just like bread dough, it needs to be treated almost like bread. So once you get a freshly baked loaf of bread, you really need to eat it within a couple of days, once you get a freshly baked king cake, you really need to enjoy it within a couple of days."
Atwoods will continue selling king cakes until Fat Tuesday, which is March 5.
