BATON ROUGE, La. (LSUA) - Two members of the LSUA softball team have been honored as top players throughout the state of Louisiana as both Lauren Rachal and RyLeigh Rutherford were named All-Louisiana Honorable Mentions by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Rachal, a junior from Alexandria, made the switch from catcher to third base this season and for the second straight season was named an All-Louisiana Honorable Mention. Rachal was the Generals best hitter on the season, leading the team in batting average, slugging percentage, on-base percentage, hits, doubles, and runs batted in. She was named First Team All-Red River Athletic Conference for the second straight season at a different position, as well as a member of the All-RRAC Tournament team following LSUA’s championship win.
Rutherford, a freshman from Florien, La., earned an honorable mention nod as a utility player, proving to be a top player for the Generals both in the circle and with a bat. From the circle, Rutherford tied for the team lead in wins as well as the team’s best-earned run average, opposing batting average against, and innings pitched. She assisted on the final out of LSUA’s RRAC Tournament Championship-clinching win over Texas A&M-Texarkana, collecting her third save of the season in the process. At the plate, she had a .358 batting average but had several key base hits, including the game-winning RBI in LSUA’s 3-2 win over #16 Houston-Victoria that sent the Generals into the RRAC Tournament Finals. Rutherford was named First Team All-Red River Athletic Conference and finished third in the voting as Louisiana’s Freshman of the Year.
The Generals finished the season 34-16, won the RRAC Tournament for the fourth time in five years since joining the conference and clinched a spot in the NAIA National Championship Tournament for the sixth time in program history and sixth time in the last seven seasons.
