ALEXANDRIA,, La. (LSUA) - The #20 LSUA softball team never trailed throughout the seven innings of regulation in the final game of the series against #15 Houston-Victoria, but the Jaguars tied the game late and got two runs in the extra inning to drop the Generals 5-3 Saturday afternoon at Generals Field.

LSUA took its first lead in the bottom of the second inning. Siearrah Anderson drew a base on balls with one out, and then RyLeigh Rutherford found the wall in right-center for a double to put runners on second and third with still just one out. Miyah Portalis got LSUA on the board as her fly ball was deep enough to center field to score Anderson from third and make it 1-0 Generals.

The weather helped Houston-Victoria tie the game in the top of the fourth inning. As a steady rain started to fall on the Generals, the Jaguars drew a lead-off walk, with a wild pitch enabling the runner to move to second, with the throw down going into the outfield, allowing the runner to move to third. At that point, the game was halted for an hour and three minutes for a rain delay. Once the action picked back up, the Generals retired the next three batters in order, but the second in that line was a fly ball to center that allowed the runner to tag and score the unearned run and make it 1-1.

But LSUA took no time in getting the lead right back, loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the fourth. Shelby Brown put the Generals back out in front as she dropped a base hit in front of the Jaguar center fielder, and scoring both Morgan Berry and RyLeigh Rutherford for a 3-1 Generals lead.

Houston-Victoria used a two out rally to tie the game back up in the top of the fifth inning as a RBI double down the left field line and a RBI single through the hole at shortstop each brought in a run to even the score at 3-3. From there, neither team scored throughout the rest of regulation.

In the extra frame, UHV got the hits they needed, putting together another two-out rally to take their first lead of the game. A RBI double down the line made it 4-3, with a RBI double to right giving the Jaguars an insurance run. The Generals had their chance to tie the game in the bottom half, getting the tying run on base as a walk was followed by a ground ball that the UHV third baseman threw into right field to put Generals on the corners with just one out. But LSUA could not get them home as a pair of fly balls did in the LSUA rally.

Abbey McMillian (6-4) came on and threw three innings, giving up three hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. McKell Marble started the game and threw a total of 3.1 innings over two stints in the circle. She gave up just one hit and one unearned run with one walk and one strikeout. RyLeigh Rutherford threw 1.2 innings and gave up three hits with two runs, both earned, one walk and didn’t strike out any batters.

Four different Generals each had a base hit in the game. Shelby Brown was one of three with two RBI. RyLeigh Rutherford and Lauren Rachal each had a double to account for their hits in the ball game. Miyah Portalis collected LSUA’s other RBI without the benefit of a base hit in the contest.

The #20 Generals (19-10, 6-3 RRAC) look to regroup from their first conference losses of the season on the road next weekend in San Antonio as LSUA takes on Our Lady of the Lake in a three-game series. First pitch of Friday’s doubleheader against the Saints (10-11, 7-5 RRAC) is set for noon at the OLLU Softball Field.
